 Early Life and Education 

Setti D. Warren’s path to leadership began with a strong educational foundation. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Boston College and later completed his Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Suffolk University Law School. His academic achievements not only reflect his intellectual rigor but also his deep commitment to understanding governance, justice, and civic engagement. These early experiences prepared him for a career focused on serving people and solving real-world challenges. 

A Distinguished Career in Public Service 

Warren’s career in public service is both broad and impactful. He first served as Special Assistant in the White House Office of Cabinet Affairs under President Bill Clinton, where he contributed to key administrative and policy initiatives. His leadership continued as the New England Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), where he oversaw emergency preparedness and disaster response efforts across the region. 

Later, as Deputy State Director for Senator John F. Kerry (D-MA), Warren played an integral role in supporting federal-state relations and addressing constituent needs. His professional journey demonstrates a clear commitment to public leadership and policy innovation at both state and national levels. 

Serving as Mayor of Newton, Massachusetts 

In 2010, Setti Warren made history by becoming the first African American popularly elected mayor in Massachusetts. During his two terms as Mayor of Newton (2010–2018), he focused on fiscal responsibility, affordable housing, and sustainable urban development. His leadership style emphasized collaboration and inclusivity, ensuring that the city’s growth reflected the needs and aspirations of all residents. 

As mayor, Warren also chaired the Community Housing and Development Committee for the United States Conference of Mayors, advocating for policies that promoted equitable housing and community investment. His work in this area continues to influence local governance and urban policy across the country. 

Military Service and National Contributions 

Before his mayoral tenure, Warren served a yearlong tour of duty in Iraq as a Naval Intelligence Specialist, showcasing his commitment to national service and security. This experience added a unique dimension to his leadership—combining discipline, analytical thinking, and a deep respect for teamwork. 

Warren’s service background also shaped his understanding of global affairs, leading to his lifelong membership in The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), one of the nation’s most prestigious foreign policy institutions. 

Academic Leadership at Harvard Kennedy School 

Today, Setti D. Warren serves as the Director of the Institute of Politics (IOP) and Adjunct Lecturer in Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School. In this dual role, he helps nurture the next generation of political thinkers, policymakers, and civic leaders. His work focuses on connecting academic research with practical governance, fostering dialogues that inspire social progress and ethical leadership. 

Prior to this, he held the position of Executive Director of the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics, and Public Policy, where he advanced discussions on journalism, democracy, and the role of media in shaping public opinion. Through his leadership, the center became a hub for innovation in public communication and civic engagement.
